Ag groups excited to work with new Manitoba Agriculture Minister

Manitoba’s next agriculture minister is already stepping into the role with years of experience.

Ron Kostyshyn was sworn in on Wednesday, alongside Premier Wab Kinew and the rest of his cabinet.

He previously served as the ag minister from 2012 to 2016 under then-Premier Greg Selinger.

Multiple organizations have already welcomed Kostyshyn back to the role including the Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP).

“Minister Kostyshyn’s past experience in this role, as well as personal experience as a producer, should provide confidence that Manitoba producers will continue to have a voice at the cabinet table when key decisions are being made that affect their farm operations,” said Brenna Mahoney, General Manager of KAP.

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association also issued a statement welcoming Kostyshyn.

“The Wheat Growers look forward to working with Minister Kostyshyn as we continue to grow the agriculture industry and ensure stability to the food supply chain,” stated Gunter Jochum, President.

Kostyshyn replaces Derek Johnson as the ag minister. Johnson served under the previous PC government. He will still serve as an MLA as he was re-elected as the representative for Interlake-Gimli.

“I would like to thank former Minister Johnson for his steadfast commitment to working tirelessly for Manitoba producers and willingness to always listen,” said Jill Verwey, KAP president.

“We were pleased to have achieved successes through increased funding for agriculture through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, an increase of the Education Property Tax Rebate to 50 per cent, and support of additional seats at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine for Manitoba students.”

KAP is also confident there will be a seamless transition in the sector as Kostyshyn settles into the role.
