Crop Report 2020

All regions of Saskatchewan reporting harvest progress

Sep 10, 2020 | 2:40 PM

SASKATCHEWAN – Another great week for Saskatchewan farmers taking off the 2020 crop.

Producers made significant harvest progress and now have 43 per cent in the bin, up from 28 per cent last week.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported for the week of Sept. 1 to 7 an additional 29 per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Rain and cooler temperatures in eastern and northern areas delayed harvest progress. The region needs warm weather to dry fields and allow crops to mature.

Lyle Cowell is the agronomy manager for Nutrien Ag Solutions for north east Saskatchewan. He said progress is at about a normal pace for the region.

“It’s a tough guess but I’ll say 10 to 15 per cent done. Quite a bit of the barley is off and some of the peas are off,” Cowell told farmnewsNOW. “We’re just in the waiting phase hoping the wheat, canola and some of the other crops will start to be ready this week.”

Cowell describes yields in general as average. Barley yields were quite good but there are reports of lower bushel weights after the heat last month. He said pea yields were variable ranging from poor to great.

“The peas suffered with too much water and then not enough. We had quite a stretch of hot weather in August,” he said.

Near Hyas, north of Yorkton, Sask. the Johnson family’s operation is reporting good yields, but it is certainly not a bumper crop. Tim Johnson said they are making good progress.

“We are about 40 per cent done,” Johnson said. “This week’s weather looks really good. We’re butting up against uncured crops constantly. We could be a little further advanced but we’re trying to limit the amount of grain we dry.”

Johnson said in the next seven days he expected they will be at 70 per cent, if the forecast is true.

“Most of our stuff is now cured and ready,” Johnson said.

The southwest region has made the most progress in the province with 71 per cent of the crop now combined. The southeast region is at 59 per cent. West-central is at 38 per cent complete while east-central is at 29 per cent.
