Saskatchewan Crop Report

Warm weather, less rainfall helps with crop development and haying operations

Jul 30, 2020 | 1:00 PM

The recent warm weather has some farmers preparing for harvest.

Winter cereals are starting to ripen and it’s expected harvesting should begin in the next few weeks.

Most spring cereals, canola, peas and soybeans are in fair to excellent condition.

Moisture conditions have reduced slightly but crop development has rapidly increased.

Topsoil moisture for cropland is at 71 per cent adequate or surplus. For hay and pasture land, 64 per cent adequate or surplus.

Along with the warm weather, less rainfall allowed for haying operations to continue.

The latest crop reports indicate that livestock producers have 26 percent of the hay crop cut and 49 percent baled or put into silage.

Hay yields are below normal this year particularly those that received less rainfall in early summer. Quality of hay is rated as seven percent excellent, 68 percent good, 20 percent fair, and five percent poor.

Any crop damage this week was due to strong winds, lack of moisture localized flooding, hail, and wildlife.
