MELFORT, Sask. – The new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada unveiled his shadow cabinet.

Pierre Poilievre named Alberta Conservative MP John Barlow the agriculture critic.

Barlow served in the position under previous leaders. He also endorsed Poilievre during the leadership campaign.

Associate shadow ministers of agriculture are Regina-Lewvan MP Warren Steinley and Richard Lehoux from Beauce, Que.

Prince Albert MP Randy Hoback was named associate shadow minister for International Trade.

The new shadow cabinet will make its first appearance in the House of Commons on Oct. 17.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its WASDE report for October and soybeans received the bulk of the market reaction.

It was the lower soybean yield at 49.8 bushels per acre that had the market responding with futures 20 cents higher. Corn and wheat yield projections were in-line with analyst expectations.

Corn traded relatively flat after the report was released while the wheat contracts traded lower.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed the presence of avian flu in a non-commercial non-poultry flock in the Langley Township of British Columbia.

CFIA didn’t disclose how many birds were infected.

The highly infectious H5N1 virus has been spreading since the spring and infections have been recorded in several commercial and backyard flocks.

Migrating wild birds have been identified as the main factor for the spread.
