Still well below average

Harvest progress climbed significantly last week

The slow start to harvest in Saskatchewan picked up last week with the dry weather allowing producers to continue to get the crop off.

Harvest is now 66 per cent complete, up 22 percentage points from the previous week.

However, that’s still behind the 5-year average of 91 per cent, and 10-year average of 82 per cent.

Harvest in the northeast is now up to 49 per cent complete.

A quarter of the canola crop has been combined, while 66 per cent of fall rye and spring wheat are off the field.

Eighty-three per cent of durum has been combined, along with 59 per cent of oats, 81 per cent of barley, 82 per cent of lentils, and 98 per cent of field peas.

The east-central region has 52 per cent of the crop in the bin.

Forty-two per cent of the canola in that region has been combined, along with 99 per cent of fall rye and 61 per cent of spring wheat.

Eighty-three per cent of durum has been combined, with 37 per cent of oats, 67 per cent of barley, and 97 per cent of lentils and field peas.

Over 80 per cent of cropland, hayland, and pasture topsoil moisture is listed as adequate after drier weather over the past couple of weeks.

Most crop damage this week was due to the high winds, while the Ministry of Agriculture cautions producers to carry fire suppression equipment during harvest as the warm, dry conditions persist across Saskatchewan.
