“The southwest region leads seeding progress at 91 per cent complete, and this falls very closely by the west central region at 90 per cent. The southeast region is 87 per cent and the northwest at 86 per cent,” she added. “The northeast and east central regions are lagging a little bit behind, and they are at 67 and 63 per cent complete.”

Marcino said a long stretch of good weather has helped dry some wetter fields. 

“For the time period from May 26 to Jun. 1 there wasn’t widespread rain, but there were some showers in and around the province. But for the most part, reporters tell us it was generally dry, windy, and hot last week.”  

Crop conditions vary across the province. Marcino said areas like east central have plenty of moisture, which is helping crop development. 

“Crops that are seeded are emerging very, very quickly, especially with the warm weather. Some areas of the province that are maybe a little bit drier, there have been some reports that hilltops or some of the dry areas, some of the little shallower seeded crops are having a bit harder time emerging,” she said. “But I think some of those areas might have received some rain so that should help out on that front.”  

Marcino anticipates producers will be busy again this week, with seeding and post-seeding activities on the agenda.
