Increasing trade with China

Alberta deepens ties with China through trade mission

Apr 10, 2026 | 2:04 PM

Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation will travel to China diversify exports and drive long-term economic growth.

The mission to China is the first formal visit from an Alberta elected official since 2018.

RJ Sigurdson said the focus will be on strengthening trade relationships and positioning the province as a reliable supplier of high-quality agriculture and agri-food products.

He said this work supports Alberta’s agri-food sector and creates new opportunities for farmers, producers and processors across the province.

“We are working to strengthen Alberta’s well-deserved reputation as a trusted trading partner and consistent supplier of high-quality ag products consumers around the world count on,” Sigurdson said. “I look forward to representing Alberta during this mission, strengthening trade relationships and exploring new opportunities for growth in Chinese markets.”

During his visit, the minister will attend the China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE), a tradeshow showcasing high-end goods and a major gateway to entering markets in China.

Sigurdson will represent Alberta at the CICPE Country of Honour Reception, which will feature Canada as the country of honour. He will also highlight Alberta’s beef, liquor and beer industries during promotional events and a cooking demonstration.

China is Alberta’s third-largest export market for agri-food products following the U.S. and Japan. In 2025, Alberta’s agri-food exports to China totaled $1.4 billion, making it Canada’s second-largest provincial agri-food exporter to China after Saskatchewan.
