Saskatchewan’s Premier says trade a key issue heading into the new year

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says his province is navigating what he calls choppy waters, as global trade issues continue to create uncertainty.

In a year-end interview with The Canadian Press, Moe says most of Canada’s immediate economic problems can be traced back to U-S President Donald Trump.

Trump has imposed tariffs as high as 50 per cent on some products, while threatening additional duties on Canadian fertilizer, which could harm Saskatchewan’s potash industry.

Moe says people need to “take a breath” on Trump’s threats and not take the president’s words literally.

The premier also says he won’t stop the flow of potash to the United States, arguing it’s in Canada’s best economic interests to get a new trade deal with its southern neighbour.

Further complicating the picture, China has slapped punishing tariffs on Canadian canola, a major crop in Saskatchewan.

Moe says the double whammy of trade issues have put his province in a position of having to make tough budgetary decisions next year.

He has declined to provide details on what those choices could be but says he hopes the economic storm doesn’t last any longer.
