Insects in stored grain

Listen: Strategies for dealing with insects in grain bins

Jan 31, 2025 | 4:27 PM

Reports are already coming in about insects in stored grain. Regularly monitoring for insects is always important and can alleviate a lot of problems at delivery.

The Canada Grain Act has a zero-tolerance policy for insects that feed on whole, sound grain in grain delivered to elevators.

Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Crops Extension Specialist Kim Stonehouse says the most sensitive way to detect insects in stored grain is by using a probe trap.

Information on preventing and controlling insects in stored grain can be found in the Saskatchewan Agriculture publication: Insects and Mould in Stored Grain or contact your local Saskatchewan Agriculture regional office.
