A new mobile skills lab has been unveiled to highlight the many different career paths in agriculture.

The Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada (AMC) officially launched their mobile skills lab at the recent Ag in Motion event.

President Donna Boyd said they’ve been speaking with the Government of Saskatchewan and other partners to find the correct way to bring talent into the industry, and the mobile skills lab is one of those pieces.

She said agriculture is much more complex than it used to be with a burgeoning ag-tech industry, and people with a visionary interest are needed. There are many pathways and roles in agriculture, according to Boyd, including engineering, finance, marketing, and communications.

The lab will travel throughout Saskatchewan during the summer, and that will be extended this fall. Boyd said they will be seen at trade shows, schools, and other events as well.

A pair of farm groups are expressing concern about a potential strike between CPKC and CN Rail.

Former labour minister Seamus O’Regan told the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to review whether a strike could have safety implications, with a decision to be released next week. However, O’Regan has since stepped down, being replaced by Steven MacKinnon.

Wheat Growers Saskatchewan Director Daryl Fransoo said any potential strike could hurt Canada’s reputation as a reliable supplier and would have a major impact on the fall shipping season.

Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan Vice-President Bill Prybylski said any extended work stoppage would negatively affect producers’ ability to get grain moved.

According to APAS, Western Canadian producers lost $6.7 billion due to the shipping disruptions experienced in 2013-14.
