Agriculture Roundup for Wednesday, May 29, 2024

Workers at the Cargill Dunlop facility in Guelph, Ont. are on strike. Roughly 1,000 employees started job action at midnight on May 27.

The members of UFCW Local 175 voted 82 per cent in favour of going to the picket lines.

President of UFCW Local 175 Kelly Tosato said the negotiating committee raised several issues at the bargaining table including the increased cost of living, and the $2 per hour pandemic pay that the employer took away during the COVID pandemic.

“Our members at Cargill Dunlop are an integral part of a vital supply chain that helps keep food on the table for people every day,” Tosato said. “The decision to go on strike is never easy but these members aren’t satisfied with what the company has brought to the table.”

The plant is one of the largest beef processing facilities in eastern Canada processing 1,500 head of cattle per day, employing 950 people. It’s also the only large-scale Halal-certified facility in Canada.

Beef Farmers of Ontario (BFO) and the Ontario Cattle Feeders Association (OCFA) say they are hopeful the negotiations between both parties will come to a swift resolution.

Shares of Ag Growth International Inc. were up 15 per cent in early trading after the company said it had rejected an unsolicited takeover offer.

AGI shares were up $7.00 at $53.02 on the Toronto Stock Exchange today.

The company did not identify who made the non-binding and conditional proposal to purchase the company, but said it determined the bid was not in the best interests of AGI or its shareholders.

AGI said it is not in talks with any third party, nor is there any agreement with respect to any proposal.

AGI makes farm equipment including grain handling equipment, storage bins, steel buildings and structures. The company has manufacturing facilities in Canada, the United States, Brazil, India, France and Italy.
