Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan have named the recipient of the 2023 Champion Award.

Shawn Colborn farms with his cousins on their fifth-generation farm near Delisle that includes 12,000 acres of grainland, a 700-head Red Angus/Charolais cow-calf enterprise, and a 40,000 hen layer poultry operation.

Each year, the award recognizes a recipient who has engaged consumers about agriculture and Colburn has worked to build public trust in farming and food in the province and beyond. He also frequently welcomes guests to his farm to see first-hand how food is grown.

“Why open the gate to our farms? Because it’s important. We don’t want to have misinformation dictate how we farm,” Colborn said. “It’s ultra-important for us to reach out to consumers so that they can continue to believe in the safety of Canadian food that has come from Canadian farms.”

Colborn attended the University of Saskatchewan and worked in the crop inputs sector before rejoining the family farm in 2011.

He has served as Chair for Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan and a director on the Board of the Saskatchewan Egg Producers. He also helped initiate Delisle Crops for Community, which raised over $300,000 by growing crops on town-owned land and donating the proceeds back to the community to help improve recreation facilities. Colborn is also very involved in Saskatchewan youth softball as a coach for his daughters.

Colborn is committed to answering consumer questions about agriculture. He has participated in several video projects with Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Egg Producers, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and the World Farmers Organization.

The Farm and Food Care Champion was announced yesterday at the annual Cultivating Trust Conference in Saskatoon.
