Agriculture Roundup for Wednesday Oct. 4, 2023

Oct 4, 2023 | 12:56 PM

The Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre in Saskatoon will receive $5 million over the next five years from the federal and provincial governments.

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit said the province has one of the fastest growing value-added sectors in the country due to the agricultural base, investment potential and research, and innovation assets like the Food Centre.

“New ideas and products are one of the key enablers of the competitive, growing economy we have in our province, and this investment ensures that we will continue to grow and protect our agriculture industry in Saskatchewan,” he said.

Established in 1997, the Food Centre is a non-profit organization focused on product development and commercialization services to agri-food processors.

It has supported the development and processing of over 1,000 new products, consulted with more than 500 companies and assisted in product commercialization related to almost all new agri-food start-ups in the province.

CANTERRA SEEDS said Brent Derkatch has been named its new President and CEO.

Derkatch replaces David Hansen, who announced in April 2023 his intention to retire at the end of the calendar year.

Derkatch has been with CANTERRA SEEDS since 2001 and has served as the Director of the Pedigreed Seed Business Unit for the past five years. Derkatch will step into his new role immediately, as Hansen transitions to an advisory role until his departure in December.

Both Hansen and the board believe that Derkatch’s operational and communication skills, and experience, combined with his strong leadership abilities, will position the company for continued financial growth in the future.

Oleta LaRush will assume responsibility for BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions, effective Nov. 1.

In this role, she will lead Canadian operations and the Canadian Leadership Team for the agriculture division at BASF and will join the North American Leadership team. She will also continue to serve as a member of the BASF Canada board of directors.

Jonathan Sweat will lead Seed Treatment North America based in North Carolina.
