New grain elevator up and running in Melfort

It’s no longer a secret in Melfort.

The community’s new G3 grain elevator is up and running after being in the works for almost two years. The company announced the project back in September 2021 along with plans to create an elevator in Rycroft, Alberta.

Greg Claypool, Manager of G3 in Melfort, told farmnewsNOW they loaded up their first 150-car train back in mid-July.

“So that was good to see, some of our private fleet of cars come through and we got it loaded up and off to Vancouver,” he said.

He added the elevator will play a big role in getting local grain to other markets. This will definitely be the case during the upcoming harvest.

“We have the ability to hold (grain for) a couple of unit trains, so our capacity is about 42,000 tonnes,” Claypool said.

The elevator will also be able to unload a Super-B truck in less than five minutes.

Meanwhile, the plan is to have a grand opening ceremony on Aug. 10.

Claypool noted the date may need to change with it all depending on when farmers start harvesting their crops.
