4-H Steer Sale in Swift Current raises over $464K

Jul 4, 2023 | 3:00 PM

Over $464,000 was raised over the long weekend for 4-H Clubs around the Swift Current area.

The non-profit, which provides positive youth development, was the beneficiary of the annual Steer Sale at Swift Current Ag and Ex’s Frontier Days.

“Most of (the money) goes back to the 4-H members themselves for all the hard work with their steers,” said Megan Muri, events coordinator for Swift Current Ag and Ex.

In total, 102 steers were sold, averaging $3.85 per pound.

Muri explained she didn’t have numbers from previous years; however, she still believes this year’s sale was successful in bringing in a lot of money.

“(The sales) tend to follow the market, though they are a bit higher because people are more willing to support a 4-H (member) than to just go out and buy a steer to fill their freezers,” she said.

The high-selling steer, which so happened to be the grand champion, was owned by Cooper Smyth from the Nomads 4-H Club. It sold for $7 a pound to Plewis Auto for a grand total of $8,960.

The Reserve Grand Champion, which was raised by Hillary Sauder from the Ernfold 4-H Club, sold for $4.50 a pound to Albert Hapke.
