MELFORT, Sask. – Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) continues and one of the featured events is the bison show and sale.

Donally Livestock and XY Bison from Fort St. John, B.C., had the grand champion female.

Silver Creek Bison from Binscarth, Man., showed the grand champion bull which also had the highest selling price at $21,500.

The reserve grand champion bull was consigned by Roaming K Bison from Foam Lake, Sask.

Silver Creek was named premier breeder and exhibitor. Dylan Chartrand of Hodgeville, Sask. was named rookie of the year.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe continued to take aim at proposed changes to federal gun control legislation that focuses on military-style assault weapons.

Moe said a proposed amendment to the legislation would broaden the number of firearms being banned and could include many semi-automatic rifles and shotguns used for hunting.

On Monday, federal Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino accused some Conservatives of whipping up fear that the Liberal government plans to outlaw ordinary long guns and hunting rifles.

He said the government only wants to reinforce a regulatory ban on assault-style firearms such as the AR-15 by enshrining a definition in legislation.

Agriculture groups in Canada applauded the Liberal government’s long-awaited Indo-Pacific strategy and said they are hoping it will deliver on more free trade.

The strategy that ministers announced in Vancouver on Sunday seeks to increase military spending and build closer trade ties with countries in the region.

More than $2 billion is promised in the strategy with $244 million going toward improving trade.

Producer groups say that is good news for farmers because it could lead to Canada striking more free trade deals.

Canola Council of Canada president Jim Everson said he thinks the strategy can bolster existing trade deals, like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Everson said he hopes it could also lead to progress in negotiations for an agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
