MELFORT, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Government said SaskTel will be expanding a rural fibre initiative to bring better internet to an additional 70 more towns and villages.

The province said the Crown corporation is to spend an additional $100 million to expand the service to narrow the rural-urban digital divide in Saskatchewan.

Originally announced in 2020, the program will bring the fibre optic broadband network to more than 110,000 residents and businesses in more than 130 rural communities.

All communities are expected to have the service by the end of March 2025.

Saskatchewan is postponing its winter weight season, which allows heavier cargo on provincial highways.

It is being delayed because of milder weather this month.

Colder temperatures during the winter months help freeze and strengthen roads.

The winter weight season typically runs from Nov. 16 to March 14.

The Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission (SaskCanola) Board of Directors will have four new members.

Anthony Eliason of Outlook and Jon Fehr of Herschel are acclaimed for four-year terms.

Margaret Rigetti of Langbank and Ed Schafer of Makwa are appointed for two-year terms.

They will assume their roles at the SaskCanola annual general meeting in January. More details can be found at saskcrops.com.
