MELFORT, Sask. – Nutrien Ltd. said it earned 1.6 billion in the third quarter of 2022, up 118 per cent from the same three-month period in 2021.

The Saskatoon-based fertilizer giant, which reports in U.S. dollars, said its profit in the quarter includes a non-cash impairment reversal of $330 million related to the company’s phosphate operations.

On an adjusted basis, Nutrien said it earned $2.5 billion, compared to $1.6 billion in the previous year’s quarter.

Nutrien’s total sales for the three months ended Sept. 30 were $8.2 billion, a year-over-year increase of 36 per cent, though potash sales volumes in North America and Brazil declined in the third quarter.

Alberta wheat and barley producers have voted in favour of amalgamating their governing bodies.

The Alberta Barley Commission (ABC) and the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) each held plebiscites. Barley farmers voted 89 per cent in support of joining while wheat farmers were 88 per cent in favour of forming one organization.

A total of 1,569 votes were cast over the month of October in both plebiscites – 606 from barley voters and 963 from wheat voters.

Both plebiscites saw a 6.1 per cent participation rate from eligible voters.

McCain Foods and Farm Credit Canada (FCC) are working together to help potato farmers who are transitioning to sustainable agricultural practices.

The move will help McCain advance its goal to implement regenerative agricultural practices across 100 per cent of its contract potato acreage worldwide by 2030.

The transition to more sustainable farming practices often requires up-front investments in new equipment and practices from farmers.

This first-of-its-kind initiative in Canada will offer financial incentives to McCain potato farmers who are at the onboarding level or higher on McCain’s Regenerative Agriculture Framework.

A combination of funds from FCC’s Sustainability Incentive Program and McCain will be used to issue an annual incentive to farmers for the life of the program.
