MELFORT, Sask. – Alberta RCMP have arrested and charged two men in connection to the theft of canola.

Police received a report on Sept. 28 that a significant amount of canola had been stolen from a farm in Camrose County.

Later that day RCMP were contacted when individuals attempted to sell canola to a Hutterite colony in the area.

RCMP located the grain truck and another vehicle and attempted to do a traffic stop. A spike belt was used to stop the grain truck and the driver was arrested. The driver of a second vehicle was arrested southwest of Bashaw. Canola and a grain auger were recovered in the investigation.

Both men from Stettler, 33-year-old Jesse MacDonald, and 36-year-old Tristan Ruby were remanded into custody on several charges. Both individuals’ cases have been adjourned to Oct. 13.

The canola reported missing from the farm had an estimated value of between $7,000 and $8,000.

Rail traffic in and out of the Grande Prairie, Alta area has been halted.

A fire near Latornell damaged a bridge on a CN Rail line early yesterday morning.

A CN spokesperson said it was too early to say when service would be restored.

The closure of the track not only affects grain but other commodities like frac sand.
