MELFORT, Sask. – The Western Grains Research Foundation is providing financial support for a new research facility.

WGRF will contribute $750,000 to the Advanced Agriculture Research Centre of Excellence at SARDA AG Research in Donnelly, AB.

WGRF Board Chair Dr. Keith Degenhardt said SARDA’s research has been benefiting producers in the region for more than 30 years.

“WGRF is excited to contribute to this unique opportunity for SARDA to build a hub in the north for advanced agricultural research,” Degenhardt said.

SARDA Ag Research is a non-profit organization directed by producers from the Municipal Districts of Smoky River, Greenview, Big Lakes County, Northern Sunrise County and the County of Grande Prairie, AB.

The centre is expected to be completed by spring 2023.

A recent spike in avian influenza is causing the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre, outside of Winnipeg, to stop accepting some birds.

The organization said it has seen a steep increase of influenza in wild species, specifically geese and ducks, in Winnipeg and surrounding areas.

Centre executive director Zoe Nakata said it isn’t accepting Canada geese and blue-winged teal to protect other birds in care and people who work there.

She said people can still call the Manitoba Conservation tip line, which is able to provide advice or respond to calls related to those species.

Syngenta has unveiled one of the world’s highest-resolution soil mapping services.

Interra® Scan was released at Fields of Innovation 2022, Europe’s premier agricultural innovation event.

It offers high-resolution soil mapping for up to 27 layers of information, providing growers with precise information on pH, soil texture, organic matter, carbon, and cation exchange capacity, as well as elevation and plant water availability.

The map allows growers to understand the texture, nutrient and carbon content of their soils to optimize nutrition and carbon capture.
