MELFORT, Sask. – The G20 Agriculture Ministers’ meeting in Indonesia concluded with a renewed commitment to support Ukraine during the ongoing invasion by Russian forces.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said Canada will continue to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people who have been impacted, and recognize the need to address the challenges posed by it, including the impacts on supply chains.

‘Canada joined other G20 members in the condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine and to outline the serious consequences for the agriculture sector, food prices, and food security,” Bibeau said.

Bibeau said other conversations with her counterparts focused on finding solutions to international issues in agriculture.

She said there was a commitment toward sustainable agriculture and enabling more farmers worldwide to bring more products to market.

“Research, innovation, women and youth empowerment, along with a science and rules-based trade are the keys to our objective to eradicate hunger in the world,” Bibeau said. “Canada will continue to take concrete actions and engage in international dialogue through the G20 and other organizations, to help farmers feed the world sustainably.”

Bibeau participated in a forum on digital agriculture. She said it was an opportunity to discuss challenges and best practices to ensure equal access to digital tools and resources for women and youth.

She highlighted Canada’s work towards increasing investment in high-speed broadband, as well as the ongoing effort to empower youth and women to participate in the agriculture and food sector, including through Canada’s Youth Agriculture Council.

Bibeau also participated in bilateral meetings with representatives from Indonesia, U.S., India, and Turkey.
