Agriculture Roundup for Friday Aug. 6, 2021

Aug 6, 2021 | 12:34 PM

Late July storms on the Prairies damaged crops with hail, some as large as golf balls.

The Canadian Crop Hail Association is investigating more than 311 claims of crop damage that happened from July 21-30.

Murray Bantle with Co-operative Hail Insurance Company said storms damaged cereals and oilseeds in northwest Manitoba.

In Saskatchewan, cereals, legumes and oilseeds were damaged in the east central and west central areas, while crops were damaged in the Alberta communities of Barrhead, Gem, Westlock, Viking and Lacombe.

Manitoba’s Opposition New Democrats are calling for support for livestock producers who are facing shortages of feed due to this year’s drought.

The NDP wants the provincial government to offer interest-free 15-year loan, wants lease payments to be cut in half for Crown lands, and wants federal aid to subsidize the cost of feed supplies and offset the cost of transporting it.
