Beef cattle show and family fun in Weldon on Saturday

Jul 30, 2021 | 12:13 PM

MELFORT, Sask. — A beef cattle show in Weldon tomorrow will feature cattle from all over Saskatchewan.

The Weldon Ag Showcase and Family Fun Day was put together to fill the gap of other cattle shows in the community according to organizer Colleen Hanson.

“This was a new idea that we thought we could try and have with summer fairs and cattle shows being cancelled this year again,” Hanson said. “We built on it and added a few more things than just the cattle show.”

The junior spring steer and heifer show has had to be cancelled the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We thought this was a nice way to bring people together this year,” Hanson said. “For our cattle family, we normally see everyone at cattle shows but with those not happening, this is a way to be able to have something for the kids and adults.”

There will be a jackpot cattle show, a finished steer jackpot show, and a bred heifer jackpot show as part of tomorrow’s show.

Currently, there are over 70 head of cattle entered into the show that is happening at the Weldon Sports Grounds.

“They are coming from all different points in the province,” Hanson said. “We have some that are travelling from quite far away and then we also have our locals so it should be a nice, good mix.”

A petting zoo by Ol’ McDales, as well as kid’s activities that includes a bouncy castle, will be on throughout the day beginning at 11 a.m and running until 4 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults and free for kids under the age of 12.

The event is open to the public, Hanson said.

“You don’t need to have any interest in cattle and there will still be things for you to do,” Hanson said.

There will also be a trade show, canteen, and beer gardens on site.

At 4:30 p.m. a pie auction courtesy of local bakers will take place.

All the funds brought in will go to the Weldon Sports Club for maintenance and operating costs.

“The arena and sport grounds have undergone some changes over the years,” Hanson said. “The arena was converted into a riding arena, and we have used it for many horse and cattle events and 4-H activities.”

With this being the first event of its kind, Hanson wasn’t sure as to what the goal would be for funds or attendees.
