MELFORT, Sask. — Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) and its industry partners have released a renewed five-year strategy.

The action plan will help with the coordination of beef research priorities, funding, and technology transfer for the BCRC and other Canadian agencies.

The strategy was developed by producers, researchers, extension specialists, government, and other industry stakeholders.

Input was gathered through direct consultation, an online survey, and several online workshops.

The document can be found here.

A new interactive program will help families stay safe on the farm.

Through the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) program, youth receive a free safety vest, customized name badge, colouring sheets, and membership certificate. The toolkit will help prepare them for the important role as an official BASF Safety Scout.

BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada’s Nicole McAuley said health and safety is their priority.

“We’re focused on raising awareness about farm safety in a fun, educational way by bringing this program to farming families across Canada,” McAuley said in a news release. “The BASF Safety Scouts program aims to engage the next generation and ensure a safe, bright future for Canadian agriculture.”

According to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting, 84 Canadian children and youth died due to agriculture-related injuries between 2006 and 2015.

The program is part of BASF’s partnership with CASA and builds on the online Kids’ Safety Hub, an online resource to help farm families stay safe.

Information on the program is available on the CASA website.

The Beer Canada Board of Directors has appointed its new president.

CJ Hélie is a veteran Canadian beverage alcohol executive whose career started with Ontario’s The Beer Store and includes senior executive positions within the Canadian beer and other beverage alcohol sectors.

Hélie said a priority is to work with member companies to establish a cross country tax and regulatory framework.
