Saskatchewan Crop Report 2021

Saskatchewan farmers are dealing with crop pests

Jun 10, 2021 | 3:29 PM

MELFORT, Sask. – Seeding is virtually complete throughout Saskatchewan with 99 per cent of the crop seeded, with a few fields being seeded for green feed and silage.

Even with the rainfall over the weekend, the topsoil moisture conditions deteriorated. Higher amounts of rain in the northern regions have improved moisture conditions. Unfortunately, it brought some hail as well.

The Cando area reported 40 mm of rain, Kinistino had 37 mm, Rosthern 32 mm, Duck Lake and Spruce Home areas received 23 mm.

The crop is coming along nicely in the north east, according to Tisdale crops extension specialist Kim Stonehouse.

“Cereals, most of them are up and doing fine. Canola is on its way with a lot of it just coming out of the ground now but there is some that has been up for a while,” Stonehouse said.

Parts of the southern half of the province saw small, localized showers but there are more fields rated as being short or very short of moisture.

Martyn Mulder runs a regenerative grazing operation near Saltcoats with about 730 cows on just under 2,000 acres. What does a half inch rain mean to him in a dry June?

“Because we’ve been managing this way for the last two years our pastures are actually in pretty good condition. The moisture is always welcome,” Mulder said. “We were looking at destocking if we didn’t get some moisture. It’s a blessing, that’s for sure.”

Provincial crops extension specialist Matt Struthers said most crop damage this week was due to strong winds, dry soil conditions and insects.

“There have been quite a few infestations of flea beetles across the province and farmers are actively spraying. There has been a little bit of reseeding due to flea beetle damage,” Struthers said.

Spraying to control flea beetles and cutworms continues as weather permits.
