Livestock producers reminded to test water quality during grazing season

May 17, 2021 | 2:00 PM

Water quality for livestock can change quickly making it important to test water regularly over the course of the grazing season.

Regional Livestock and Forage Specialist in Tisdale Alice Sopatyk said it is an easy test to perform.

“You need one litre of sample taken from the livestock source,” Soptatyk said. “Bring the sample into the Tisdale regional office and we send them off to the Roy Romanow lab in Regina and help you interpret the results.”

A good mineral program can help offset poor quality waters, according to Sopatyk.

“It’s not always possible to offset the water but the only way to know is to test,” she said.

With little to no rainfall or recharge, water can change quickly and become harmful to livestock, even early on in the season.
