“Ambitious goals” added to National Beef Strategy

May 1, 2021 | 8:00 AM

Canada’s beef industry says it has set what it calls “ambitious goals” it wants to achieve by 2030.

It has added work on water; people health and safety; beef quality and food safety; and technology to its National Beef Strategy.

These join three others announced last fall, greenhouse gas and carbon sequestration; animal health and welfare; and land use and biodiversity.

A news release says the idea is for the beef industry to become part of mitigating climate change and being part of a sustainable food system.

“We want Canadians to know that we share their concerns around climate change and the need for a resilient food supply. Raising cattle in Canada is good for the environment and these goals demonstrate how we are striving to make every sector of the industry even better,” says Canadian Cattlemen’s Association president Bob Lowe in that release.

The goals will be used by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and the Beef Cattle Research Council in its future work.

More on the goals and strategy can be found here.
