MELFORT, Sask. – The Western Canadian Wheat Growers (WCWG) are putting their support behind the proposed merger of Canadian National Railway and Kansas City Southern Class 1 rail lines.

WCWG said Canadian companies that import or export materials or finished goods will all benefit from an expanded market and secure transportation link.

Chair Daryl Fransoo said the seamless movement of raw and finished goods throughout North America will benefit the Canadian, U.S. and Mexican economies.

“Having all of the transportation hubs connected aids in the timely delivery of goods,” Fransoo said.

Fransoo explained grain companies and end users will be able to take full advantage of the CUSMA trade agreement, as opportunities emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 vaccination clinics will begin today at two of Canada’s largest beef-packing plants in southern Alberta.

Both the Cargill plant near High River, and the JBS Canada facility in Brooks were hit hard by outbreaks last year.

The two plants together normally process about 70 per cent of Canada’s beef.

The president of the union that represents workers at the plants says they are relieved the immunizations are taking place.
