MELFORT, Sask. – Port of Montreal dockworkers are walking the picket line.

The federal government has warned it will table back-to-work legislation if the strike drags on.

The New Democrats are criticizing the government for saying it will step in. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said the two sides should be allowed to negotiate a deal.

Federal Labour Minister Filomena Tassi has said the government doesn’t want to intervene but it may be forced to take action to prevent serious economic disruption.

Alberta’s health minister said he will announce plans later today to vaccinate meat-plant workers against COVID-19.

Tyler Shandro said on Twitter that shots will be offered to 15,000 workers at 136 federal and provincial meat-packing plants starting this week. The inoculations will be done at a combination of on-site and community locations.

Plans for a vaccination clinic at Cargill’s beef slaughterhouse south of Calgary were put off last week. Shandro said the postponement was due to a reduction and delay in last week’s Moderna vaccine shipment.

The plant was the site of a major outbreak last year, with nearly half of its 2,200 workers testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

Canadian National Railway reported slightly weaker earnings and revenues in the first quarter but anticipates delivering strong growth for the year.

The Montreal-based railway earned $974 million, down from $1 billion a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, adjusted profits were $872 million, compared with $870 million in the first quarter of 2020.

CN Rail is in the midst of a battle with rival CP Rail to purchase U.S. railway Kansas City Southern.
