Riding For The Brand

Stock Growers auction moves to online format

Feb 19, 2021 | 4:30 PM

MELFORT, Sask. — The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) will be holding its first ever online fundraising auction next week.

SSGA president Kelcy Elford said this auction is usually held at the organization’s annual general meeting. However, last year’s AGM was cancelled, and the format of this year’s event is very uncertain.

The auction called Riding for the Brand will held from Tuesday to Thursday.

Elford said the auction has a lot to offer, including a seven-day African hunting trip.

“We’ve got fishing trips and Roughrider events. If you want to host your own event there are a couple of steak dinners for 20 to 25 people. There are coolers for vaccines. It’s a broad spectrum,” he said.

Elford said you do not have to be a cattle producer to find something special.

“There’s generators, barbeques and fridges. There’s a little bit of everything for everybody,” he said. “[Even] if your budget isn’t an African safari, don’t hesitate, just come and have a look and support stock growers.”

Elford said the 75 auction items have been donated.

“We approached different individuals, and some approached us. The support for stock growers has been overwhelming and encouraging,” Elford said.

The auction portal is Direct Livestock Marketing Systems (DLMS) which is a familiar name for cattle producers. Elford said if you have a current account with DLMS you can log in to the auction.

“It’s under their farm gate timed auctions. You can also access the site going through the Saskatchewan Stock Growers web page, click on the link and it will take you there, but you must be logged in to bid,” Elford said.

It will be a horse race style auction meaning you can place a bid with a maximum reserve, he said.

“You can put your bid in you don’t have to watch it the whole time,” he added. “I encourage everybody to take the time to look at the items. There is something in the auction for absolutely everybody.

The list of auction items can be found on here.

Bidding will open at 10:00 a.m. Feb. 23 and will close at 7:00 p.m. Feb. 25.
