Crop Report 2020

Warm dry weather needed to advance harvest

Sep 17, 2020 | 2:00 PM

SASKATCHEWAN – Another good week for Saskatchewan farmers.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported 62 per cent of the crop is in the bin with another 27 per cent swathed or ready to straight cut. That’s a jump of more than 40 per cent from last week’s report.

Producers in the southwest region are close to wrapping up harvest with 90 per cent combined. The southeast is at 77 per cent and west central is at 61 per cent. The east-central district has just over half of the crop in, the northeast is at 33 per cent and the northwest has the most work ahead of them at 18 per cent. A good stretch of warm and dry weather will be needed to advance the crop in central and northern areas.

The Nipawin area had the most rain at 25 millimetres during the reporting period. However, a large portion of the province is reporting dry conditions as a result of minimal rainfall.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 30 per cent adequate, 41 per cent short and 29 per cent very short. Hay and pastureland is under stress.

Most of the crop damage was due to frost which was variable depending on the temperature and stage of the crop. Later seeded and less mature crops were impacted the most.
