Agriculture Roundup for Monday August 31, 2020

Aug 31, 2020 | 10:25 AM

The recent warm weather has pushed harvest along.

Sara Tetland compiles the weekly crop report for Saskatchewan Agriculture.

She said most areas didn’t have any rain during this reporting period which allowed farmers to get some combining done.

“Last week, it was mainly in southern region, and parts of the central region but it is a little more widespread now and even parts of the northern region have started,” Tetland said.

Harvest is an extremely busy time and Tetland reminds everyone to be safe.

Harvest is 15 per cent complete across Saskatchewan which is ahead of the five-year average of 12 per cent.

That number is up four per cent from last week.

The province reported that minimal rainfall, coupled with warm temps depleted topsoil moisture conditions in most areas of the province.

COVID-19 and difficult growing conditions are causing more calls to the farm stress line in Saskatchewan this summer.

Mobile Crisis Services operates the Farm Stress Line.

Acting Executive Director Jan Thorson said there has been a rise in calls this summer to the Farm Stress Line and those calls often focus on things like alcohol, gambling, and family problems.

“I think it is important for people to have a concerned, caring voice to turn to that isn’t passing any judgment and is just there to listen,” Thorson said.

The Farm Stress Line is open around the clock, the number is 1-800-667-4442.

The bulk of staff are trained social workers as well as nurses and are all trained counsellors.
