Feeder cattle prices rebounding

Jun 10, 2020 | 5:00 PM

Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were showing upward movement.

Leah Clark compiles the weekly cattle report for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

She said the smallest increase was in the 500 to 600-pound class where the price jumped by $3.55 per hundredweight.

Steers in the 800 to 900-pound category climbed $9 to average $183.50 per hundredweight.

Clark said there were several factors pushing up cattle markets on the prairies.

“I think we are seeing positive indicators in the futures markets. Huge positives in slaughter capacity and the backlog of cattle going through to be moved in time for beef feeder cattle to be ready for slaughter,” Clark said.

The trend has been similar south of the border.

“In the U.S., we’re seeing the same effects but not as strong. Slaughter capacity has increased. We are seeing those futures markets show improvement week over week. There’s lots of positive indicators holding these prices higher,” she said

Canfax reported just under 4,000 head of cattle were sold in Saskatchewan, down from 5,299 the previous week and less then the 5,800 head marketed during the same time last year.

Prices of live, non-fed cattle in Alberta were steady to slightly lower on limited volumes.

The price for D2 slaughter cows dropped $1.05 to average $87.03 per hundredweight. D3 cows rose eight cents to average $77.22 per hundredweight.
