Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices improved last week.

The 800 to 900-pound steer price climbed $9 to an average of $183.50 per hundredweight. The average price for 500 to 600-pound steers jumped by $3.55 per hundredweight.

Feeder heifer prices improved by roughly $4 per hundredweight.

Canfax reported just under 4,000 head of cattle were sold in Saskatchewan last week a decline of nearly 5,300 from the previous week.

Prices of live, non-fed cattle in Alberta were steady to slightly lower on limited volumes.

Diamondback moths could cause some problems this season.

Ministry of Agriculture crops extension specialist John Ippolito said there is a possibility of two or three generations of the insect affecting canola crops.

He said the concern is the number of moths being caught in traps with is the highest he has seen in the last few years.

The adults lay eggs but it’s the larvae that causes damage feeding on the leaves and pods of the crops reducing the yield potential.

AccuWeather is predicting the U.S. will produce a record corn crop this year.

Favourable weather across much of the U.S. corn belt is expected to result in crop yields of 178.5 bushels an acre.

AccuWeather said there were many variables this spring, including the impact of COVID-19, and a drop in ethanol production as 40 per cent of U.S. corn is used to make ethanol.

There will be a better indication of yield in a month but production of 15.7 billion bushels which would be a record year for corn production.
