4-H project to help families impacted by pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on every aspect of our lives.

This also hit 4-H clubs hard with the cancellation of major events like the Melfort Regional 4-H Beef Show and Sale.

The Beatty 4-H Beef club, while helping their members sell their steers, have also started a fundraising project to help struggling families.

Food for Families will support three local organizations the Salvation Army, Melfort Food Bank and North East Outreach and Support Services.

Lori Fettes said these are difficult times for many people. Meat prices have been going up and there are limits on the amount of that can be purchased and a limited supply of economical ground beef.

“We decided it was time the kids did something for the community after the community had been so great to support them through the years. They just wanted to do something to give back,” Fettes told farmnewsNOW.

Beatty 4-H Beef club member Carter Fettes said they are asking for businesses and community members for donations that would be used to purchase steers from 4-H members and their families, pay for processing of these animals with the beef being donated to these organizations.

“We’re going to purchase a half or whole beef from someone in the club and donate it to the three local organizations,” Carter said. “If we can’t get enough donations for a half or whole beef our club has committed to top up the funds to purchase the rest of that animal.”

Lori said they have established sponsorship levels for the program, but donations of any size would be welcome.

She said the cancellation of the regional show meant 4-H clubs needed to find a way to sell the steers that the members have worked hard to raise this year.

“Many of the clubs that would have attended our show are selling their animals privately with one club selling steers at an online auction in June. Our club will be selling steers privately and this project is in addition to that.”

Carter said although he was disappointed the regional show was cancelled, he feels good about what they’re doing.

“I’m very proud of our club for putting on this project and trying to give something back to our community during unprecedented times like this. I’m glad we’re stepping up and feel proud to be a member of our club.”
