Seeding progress being made in Saskatchewan despite rain and snow in some areas

Seeding operations are underway in most areas of the province but behind the five-year average according to the latest crop report.

The southwest area of the province is leading the way with 39 per cent of the crop seeded, there is 23 per cent seeded in the southeast, 14 per cent in the west-central region, eight per cent in the northwest and three per cent in the northeast.

Provincially, seeding progress is at 18 per cent which is below the five-year average of 25 per cent.

Field work was delayed this week due to snow and rain.

The Prince Albert region had the highest amount of precipitation with 28 mm, and northern and eastern areas had snow as well. The southwest only saw small bits of precipitation.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as five percent surplus, 84 per cent adequate, and 11 per cent short. Hay and pasture moisture is rated as three per cent surplus, 75 per cent adequate, 20 per cent short and two per cent very short.

Farmers have also been busy with getting the 2019 crop harvested as well.
