Seeding has started in a few locations in southwest Saskatchewan.

Ministry of Agriculture crop extension specialist Shannon Chant said the seeders have been in the field for a couple days.

“Over the weekend there were a few producers going around Maple Creek,” Chant said. “Some just aren’t ready yet. Just north of Swift Current I saw a seeder pull into a field so there is a little seeding. There‘s been some questions about spraying so there is some pre-seed herbicide applications going on.”

Chant said producers will be starting with cereals and pulses.

Farmers in the northeast still need another 10 days to two weeks before they will begin putting in the crop.

Each year, more than 15,000 jobs in the agriculture and agri-food sector remain vacant.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder to fill these positions.

To help connect Canadians to these opportunities, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has launched a new online portal to link Canadians with jobs.

It will make it easier for candidates, including students, to find jobs in their community, and learn more about the skills and training needed to take on these positions.

BASF and the Canadian Agriculture Safety Association (CASA) have announced the digital expansion of farm safety resources for children.

BASF has supported Safety Days for children in Canada for the last four years. The program promotes farm education and safety for Canadian youth. With COVID-19 presenting new challenges, BASF and CASA have launched the platform to provide families with information, interactive resources and activities on farm safety.

Many Safety Day events, which are typically held April through June, have been cancelled or postponed due to physical distancing as a result of COVID-19. The family-friendly website is home to farm safety information and resources, colouring sheets, a grain safety game and video series on safety and health-related activities and demonstrations.
