Agriculture Roundup for Friday April 17, 2020

Apr 17, 2020 | 9:48 AM

Another blow to the cattle sector.

RealAgriculture.com is reporting Cargill’s High River, Alta. beef processing plant has suspended cattle kills.

It’s expected to be a temporary measure and sources said the plant will resume kills next week.

Cargill had announced it would reduce slaughter from 4,000 head to 1,500 head for two weeks as it deals with several COVID-19 cases among its employees.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association estimates the plant handles 36 per cent of Canadian beef processing.

Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau spoke with the United States Secretary of Agriculture to discuss the COVID-19 impact on the agri-food sector.

Bibeau discussed the status of agriculture and food production as critical infrastructure with Sonny Perdue, and to underscore the importance of uninterrupted food and agriculture trade across the Canada-U.S. border.

The two leaders addressed the importance of agricultural trade for food security, and the continued collaboration between the two countries to ease the supply chain and to safeguard the health of industries and citizens.

Avena Foods of Regina will be hosting a webinar focusing on sustainability.

From the Ground Up, farming, milling and food will be held on Earth Day on April 22.

Information will be shared on how the principles of sustainable development can be put into practice in formulating food products.
