Animal health, trade and food policy will be on the minds of livestock producers when they meet in Ottawa this week.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association annual general meeting brings together directors from provincial member associations to determine policy for the industry.

Delegates will also get the chance to meet and discuss industry issues with ministers, members of Parliament, senators and other key influencers at an annual reception held near Parliament Hill.

The association will also vote on new leadership.

Manitoba’s Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP) want the federal government to exempt the costs of heating barns and drying grain from carbon taxes.

The group said new taxes will create more uncertainty and red tape for farmers.

It said it supports the provincial government’s efforts to exempt those costs.

KAP said Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister’s plan to cushion the new tax by lowering the provincial sales tax won’t work for farmers.

The National Farmers Union said a bill regulating the grain trade between Canada, Mexico and the US is being rushed through Parliament too fast.

It says Bill C-4 will ultimately allow grain traders to pay farmers less for their grain and entrenches the ability of grain companies to ship US originated grain through Canadian terminal elevators and export it as if it was Canadian.

The group is concerned grain companies will be able to use US-grown grain to weaken prices paid to Canadian farmers by purchasing lower priced American grain grown under US subsidies.
