The beef sector started the year off with strong demand for red meat especially in China as a result of African swine fever.

Demand has slowed as Chinese workers at the ports stayed home over fears of the new coronavirus.

Canfax senior analyst Brian Perillat said Canadian producers with cattle on feed are in a pinch.

He said in Alberta, fat cattle values have dropped almost $200 a head due to coronavirus.

He said feedlots were finally starting to make money but now there is pressure on the feeder market as well.

Some parts of Saskatchewan had one of the driest months ever recorded in the province.

Environment Canada said precipitation in February was only 17 per cent of normal in some areas.

Meteorologist Terri Lang said the southeast corner of the province was the driest.

Even with snow last Saturday in Saskatoon and area, it’s the third driest February in 121 years.

The numbers were a bit better further north and west with the North Battleford region at 52 per cent of normal precipitation and Prince Albert at 80 per cent.

Regina’s Rebellion Brewing Company hit a milestone.

President Mark Heise said the company sold one million pints last year.

He credits the success to the late craft brewer Bev Robertson, who started Bushwakker Brewpub in 1991.

Heise said Robertson also influenced other Saskatchewan beer makers including Nokomis, Malty National and Pile O’ Bones.

He said one important ingredient for brewing success is support from farmers and local businesses.
