The Canadian Federation of Agriculture called for decisive action from Ottawa on rail blockades.

The federation said the blockades are causing critical supply shortages for farmers and hurting their ability to get products to market.

Federation president Mary Robinson said this is despite the fact farmers have nothing to do with the dispute over a B.C. natural gas pipeline.

The organization represents around 200,000 farm families across the country.

Saskatchewan’s agriculture minister has announced lower premiums and a slight drop in crop insurance coverage for this year.

David Marit said average premiums will decline 14 per cent to $7.40 per acre.

He said average coverage drops from $230 an acre to $224.

He said crop insurance will see several enhancements this year, with soybean coverage expanded across the province, including irrigation areas.

The insured value for vegetable crops has been updated to better reflect production costs and organic crop insurance prices are higher and premium rates are lower.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) has received funding from Ottawa to start work on the Canadian Agri-Food Sustainability Initiative.

Canadian farmers and processors will use the new online national platform to proactively meet the growing demand for proof of sustainability from customers.

CFA will use the $560,000 to create a single window for data where producers and processors can share information and connect with new networks. It will also serve as a hub to benchmark and track Canada’s efforts compared to international standards.

The initiative will support Canadian food producers’ use of label claims about the safety and quality of their food products.
