Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) said backed-up rail lines are hampering producers’ ability to export commodities.

CFA President Mary Robinson said there will be serious consequences as farmers do not get paid until products get to market.

Protesters opposed to a pipeline project in British Columbia continue to halt passenger and freight rail service across the country.

Robinson also said rail service disruptions can also have negative impacts on animal welfare issues, as propane shipments are crucial to keeping barns heated during the winter.

Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) said enhanced information sharing on domestic and international disease monitoring will be among the groups top priorities during 2020.

SHIC Executive Director Paul Sundberg explained their plans were developed in response to input gathered from a variety of stakeholders during the last quarter of 2019.

Transportation bio-security and enhanced flow of information to producers on disease monitoring and analysis are other priorities.

SHIC consists of six representatives from the National Pork Board, the National Pork Producers Council, the American Association of Swine Veterinarians and three at large producers.
