Mustard growers are looking for additional uses for their crop.

The condiment market is relatively stable and doesn’t vary much from year to year.

Research involving mustard meal is underway at the Prairie Swine Centre near Saskatoon.

SaskMustard executive producer Rick Pitzel said some research involves using mustard meal in farrowing pens.

Pig producers are watching the research with interest as they are looking for alternatives to antibiotics.

There is also research involving mustard and dairy cattle.

Mitzel said the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan is also conducting a study on gut health in dogs.

Members of the Prairie Oat Growers Association are pleased a new oat breeder has joined the Brandon Research and Development Centre.

Dr. Kirby Nilsen worked as an assistant plant breeder at the U of S Crop Development Centre. He is one of the first researchers in the world to use genome sequencing in wheat.

Oat growers executive director Shawna Mathieson said Nilsen is a capable breeder ready to step into the role and push oat breeding to the next level.

Canadian oat yields have increased over 13 per cent between 2014 and 2019 due to the development of new oat varieties with better disease resistance and higher yield potentials.

Commodity groups and agriculture companies are joining forces to bring producers valuable information.

Top Notch farming meeting is being held at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort Tuesday, Feb. 11.

There will be presentations on market access, end use royalties, clubroot and sclerotinia, intergenerational farm land transfer, barley agronomy and combine management and grain storage.

There is no fee to attend and lunch will be provided.
