Agriculture Roundup for Tuesday January 28, 2020

All agriculture markets are feeling the effects of the coronavirus.

Hams Marketing Services director of risk management Tyler Fulton said weakness in the financial markets is impacting commodity markets in response to the uncertainty related to the virus.

He said there is a lot of concern as to how it will impact demand and whether or not it’s possible it could trigger a recession if it becomes widespread.

Fulton said hog contract prices showed serious weakness to open the week.

The Conservative agriculture critic said ratifying the new Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) is an important step for producers.

John Barlow said the agreement helps ease trade between the North American countries.

Though the NDP and Bloc Quebecois have said they’d like to examine the text in Parliament, it is expected the Conservative Party will support Justin Trudeau and the Liberals in ratifying the deal.

Among the concerns Barlow has with the deal are tariffs on aluminum and steel.

He also said the agreement could hamstring future trade agreements with other countries.

While Barlow is prepared to support NAFTA, he’s still not optimistic about other free trade negotiations led by Trudeau.

It’s a message canola producers will be hearing a lot in the days and months ahead.

There is no silver bullet for dealing with clubroot.

Speaking at Manitoba Ag Days Justine Cornelson with the Canola Council of Canada said clubroot is a unique plant disease that continues to spread across the prairies.

She said it’s important to scout for the disease by pulling plants and taking a close look at the root system.

Cornelson said management strategies include lengthening the rotation for canola to one in three years and using a clubroot resistant variety. She added patch management is important in minimizing soil movement.
