Farmers say reducing red tape would make them more competitive and innovative.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is speaking out on paper burden and over-regulation during Red Tape Awareness Week.

A recent CFIB survey showed 95 per cent of farmers agree reducing red tape for small businesses is a low-cost way governments can help farmers.

CFIB’s vice-president for Western Canada and agri-business Marilyn Braun-Pollon said they’re not suggesting deregulation and removing important rules that are in place to protect Canada’s food supply.

She said red tape can include confusing forms, poor government customer service and excessive or outdated regulations.

Braun-Pollen said some governments have made progress in reducing red tape for farmers.

An annual event in Melfort next month will provide important information for producers.

The northeast branch of the Saskatchewan Institute of Agronomists will host Ag Update at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

The event will feature presentations on marketing, farm business management, research, soil testing and artificial intelligence.
