Agriculture Roundup

Agriculture Roundup for Monday January 6, 2020

Jan 6, 2020 | 10:47 AM

The President of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities is keeping a positive outlook.

Ray Orb said even though there are many challenges, agriculture is one of the major economic drivers in the country.

He said an immediate concern is the need for more federal money for infrastructure repairs in rural areas particularly for bridges.

Orb said there are about 1,500 bridges and many of them are in a state of disrepair or need to be replaced.

Forage crops can be used to manage saline areas.

Agri-environmental specialist Sarah Sommerfeld said seeding perennial forages is an effective way to manage and improve the productivity of non-productive areas. Salts in the soil prevent the uptake of water and nutrients by the plant. Plants become drought-stressed and nutrient deficient resulting in very little to no yield.

She said seeding a forage mixture that includes more salt tolerant species, is recommended. The more productive forages establish on the better quality soil. The more salt tolerant forages establish in the poorer, less productive areas.

Sommerfeld said funding is available through the Canadian Agriculture Partnership Farm Stewardship Program to convert saline land from annual grain production to permanent cover. Eligible applicants can apply for cost shared funding, up to a maximum of $10,000. Contact your local Sask. office for more information on the program.
