The Canadian Pork Council said trade with China was the biggest challenge facing the industry in 2019.

Chairman Rick Bergmann said China’s decision in June to shut the door on Canadian pork was a major blow to the sector but the situation is improving.

Bergmann said last year the council spent a lot of time working to keep African swine fever out of Canada.

The serious viral disease is deadly to pigs and highly contagious.

Canada could see new restrictions on pea exports to India.

Late last month the Indian government said on top of the current import tariffs and quotas it would be introducing a minimum price for imported peas.

Mac Ross of Pulse Canada said there has been no prior notice of the policy and exporters around the world are asking questions about how the new rule will unfold.

India placed a 50 per cent tariff on Canadian peas in November 2017.

A Winnipeg-based agricultural equipment manufacturer says poor harvests, slumping commodity prices and trade uncertainties are hurting its bottom line.

Buhler’s Versatile tractors are also sold in 200 dealerships in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
