A report by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef said there has been strong growth in its certification program.

The group developed its first outcome-based certification program in 2018.

Chair Anne Wasko said they have seen a 45 per cent increase in the volume of beef sold through the program and a 16 per cent increase in certified farms in the past six months.

The Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) members are disappointed and frustrated by the outcome of the federal, provincial and territorial agriculture ministers’ meeting in Ottawa.

GCC Chair Jeff Nielsen said despite all of the pressing challenges facing farmers across the country, the agriculture ministers were unwilling to make significant changes to the AgriStability program.

He said it’s the second time this year that ag ministers met to discuss much-needed improvements to the business risk management suite.

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) applauded news of a mini trade deal with China.

NPPC President David Herring said pressing for unrestricted market access for U.S. pork in China will remain a priority.

He said China needs affordable pork after the African swine fever outbreak.

Herring said pork is a preferred protein and growth opportunities are significant.
