Carbon Tax

Carbon tax on grain drying to be studied

Dec 18, 2019 | 10:17 AM

Prairie agriculture ministers had an opportunity to discuss carbon pricing on grain drying with the federal minister.

Producers and provincial governments in the West have complained the carbon tax is having a significant financial impact on farmers drying their crop this year.

Marie-Claude Bibeau said the issue deals with the price applied to propane and natural gas. She said she needs more data.

“I’ve asked them to help me gather more information on the situation to evaluate properly the impact on the sector,” she said. “We want to encourage every industry to work towards decreasing emissions, but at the same time, we recognize the agricultural sector may face other types of challenges.”

Bibeau didn’t dismiss the possibility some relief might be on the way for producers.

“I’m open to evaluate it. I need to build a good case to go to my colleagues and compare with other sectors, always keeping in mind our objectives. But yes, I’m open to advocate for that if we can make a good case,” she said.
