A southern Alberta rancher has been named the first-ever Canadian representative for the McDonald’s Flagship Farmer Program.

The global initiative recognizes farmers who exemplify best practices in beef production and agriculture, according to McDonald’s Canada.

Stephen Hughes from Chinook Ranch near Longview was selected for his long-term commitment to innovative ranching practices, including year-round, rotational grazing techniques.

The global organization has recognized 33 producers from 17 countries as part of the Flagship Farmer Program.

The farmers, producers, and growers are then featured in individual videos and success stories posted to the Flagship Farmers website.

Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI) expects the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to be ratified by late spring or early summer.

Earlier this week, with the support of the Democratic Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, an agreement was reached which will move foreword U.S. ratification of the deal.

CGAI Vice President Colin Robertson said he believes it will pass quickly in the Canadian parliament because there will be enough Conservatives who support it.

Once the agreement is approved it will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Livestock producers will have a chance to learn more about the effectiveness of the bulls in their herd.

A workshop lead by Dr. Kris Ringwall with the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence will review expected progeny differences or EPD traits and guide participants through worksheets to evaluate their herd sires.

Sessions will be held at Middle Lake on Jan. 22 and Nipawin Jan. 23.

Register in advance at the Ministry of Agriculture office in Tisdale Sask by Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020.
